The Challenge

The Orland Township Highway Department needed a set of billboards to promote their electronics recycling facility and clearly communicate key details. The signs had to be highly visible to passing traffic, durable enough to withstand year-round weather conditions, and designed to fit within an existing three-panel billboard structure.Â

Design Process

The project began with an on-site survey to determine exact measurements and evaluate material options that could endure changing weather conditions without fading or deteriorating. I developed three unique design concepts, each exploring different color palettes, typography, and layouts to maximize legibility at a distance while maintaining a professional and welcoming appearance.

A key design consideration was prioritizing essential information—the facility’s hours of operation and purpose were given the largest, boldest text to ensure visibility for drivers at a glance. Secondary elements, such as the Commissioner’s logo and/or additional program details, were incorporated in a way that allowed for more in-depth reading by pedestrians or stopped vehicles without overwhelming the main message.

One of the biggest challenges was designing within the constraints of a three-panel system. This required careful alignment of text and graphics across multiple break lines to maintain a seamless, professional appearance once installed. Additionally, I worked closely with a local sign shop to ensure precision in print production, preparing files with detailed cut-line instructions and proper bleed settings to avoid distortions when the panels were mounted.

Please note: The mockups shown do not represent the final three-panel system or street location and are for demonstration purposes only.

The Result

The final billboards featured three 4’ x 8’ designs, each divided into panels and placed to maximize visibility for incoming traffic. By creating a rotation system, the township was able to swap designs seasonally, keeping the messaging fresh and engaging without the need for frequent reprints.

The use of weather-resistant materials and UV-protected finishes ensured that the billboards remained vibrant and legible for multiple years, reducing long-term replacement costs.Â

Beyond their immediate function, these billboards enhanced public awareness of the township’s recycling initiatives, increasing participation in the electronics recycling program and reinforcing the township’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The project’s success also led to future collaborations with the Highway Department on additional signage and outreach materials, further strengthening their community presence.
